Why People May Look The Other Way

Firstly, individuals may be simply uninformed or misinformed about the environmental impacts of fossil fuels. Companies obviously do not want to be sharing how bad their product is for neither the land nor the air. They may not have been exposed to accurate or comprehensive information about the ways in which burning fossil fuels contributes to climate change, air pollution, and other environmental problems.

Secondly, there may be an economic and political factor at play. Fossil fuels have historically been a major driver of economic growth and development, and many individuals and industries may be resistant to the idea of transitioning away from them. In addition, some governments and policymakers may prioritize short-term economic gains over long-term environmental sustainability which is something I personally see in a lot of harmful industries.

Thirdly, climate change can and is a difficult and overwhelming issue to confront, and some people may avoid thinking about it or engaging with it as a way to cope with feelings of helplessness or anxiety. Sometimes this is something I do as it can be so overbearing but it helps me when I remember that this is our home and taking care of it is important. Being overwhelmed slowly becomes being optimistic for change.
