Energy Storage

Energy storage is an important aspect of renewable energy systems because renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are intermittent and variable. Energy storage allows excess energy generated during periods of high production to be stored and used during periods of low production, ensuring a consistent and reliable energy supply.


Types of energy storage

  • Batteries - Batteries are a popular form of energy storage for renewable energy systems because they are efficient, scalable, and can be used in a variety of applications

  • Pumped hydro storage - Pumped hydro storage is another commonly used energy storage technology that uses surplus electricity to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir. When electricity is needed, the water is released from the higher reservoir to turn a turbine and generate electricity.

  • Compressed air energy storage - Compressed air energy storage (CAES) works by compressing air and storing it in an underground cavern or above-ground tank. When electricity is needed, the compressed air is released and used to turn a turbine and generate electricity.

  • Thermal energy storage - Thermal energy storage involves storing heat in materials such as molten salt or concrete, which can be used to generate electricity or provide heating and cooling for buildings.
